A mini split's “10-year” or “12-year” warranty usually does not mean every repair will be free for that long.
Most manufacturer warranties cover eligible replacement parts, while the owner may still pay for diagnosis, labor, refrigerant, shipping, removal and reinstallation. Coverage can also depend on the exact model, installation type, registration deadline, occupancy, installer credentials and where the equipment was purchased.
The smart way to compare warranties is to read the warranty certificate for the exact indoor and outdoor model numbers, not just the badge on a product page. Then separate five questions: What component is covered? For how long? What conditions unlock the longer term? Which costs remain yours? What proof will a claim require?
This guide explains those questions and uses current manufacturer documents as real examples. Terms can change, so the examples below were checked in August 2026 and should be verified again before purchase.
What “parts warranty” actually means
A parts warranty generally means the manufacturer will provide an eligible replacement part when a covered component fails because of a qualifying defect during the warranty period. It does not automatically include the technician's time to diagnose the failure, remove the old component, install the replacement, evacuate and recharge the refrigerant circuit, or travel to the property.
That distinction is especially important with ductless systems. A replacement control board may involve modest labor. A compressor replacement can require substantial diagnostic, refrigerant and installation work even when the compressor itself is supplied under warranty.
Manufacturer documents also commonly exclude maintenance items, damage from improper installation, incompatible components, electrical problems, neglect, external events and equipment moved from its original location. “Covered for 12 years” is therefore better understood as eligible parts coverage subject to the certificate, not a 12-year promise of zero repair expense.
Parts, compressor, labor and unit replacement are different
| Warranty term | What it usually describes | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Parts | Eligible factory components other than items separately defined or excluded | Controls, accessories, line sets, remotes and consumables may have different treatment |
| Compressor | The compressor component, often for a different term than other parts | Labor, refrigerant, freight and replacement-unit coverage are separate questions |
| Labor | Technician time for diagnosis and repair | Whether labor is included at all, who provides it and whether travel or diagnostic charges are covered |
| Unit replacement | Replacement of a larger assembly or unit under narrowly defined conditions | Covered failure type, registration, maintenance requirements and whether installation costs remain yours |
Never assume a long compressor term equals a long complete-system term. Likewise, a parts warranty is not a labor warranty. Compare each category independently.
Current mini split warranty examples
The following table is a reading aid, not a substitute for the complete certificate. It applies only to the named product families and circumstances described in the linked documents.
| Product family | Published coverage example | Key conditions and owner-paid items |
|---|---|---|
| MRCOOL DIY 5th Generation | 5 years parts; 7 years compressor | No registration required in the current certificate. Labor, diagnosis, installation, shipping and refrigerant costs are excluded. |
| MRCOOL DIY Select | 1 year parts; 2 years compressor | No registration required. Installation must follow instructions and applicable laws and codes; diagnostic proof may be required. |
| Daikin ductless models listed in certificate PWDDMSTWZS, including current MXM combinations | Up to 5 years on all parts without registration; up to 12 years on all parts with qualifying registration | Owner-occupied residential terms; online registration generally within 60 days. Labor, freight and refrigerant are not paid. State or provincial rules can alter registration and transfer conditions. |
| Mitsubishi Electric HM, WR, HX and WX residential systems covered by the June 2026 statement | 5 years parts and 7 years compressor; extended to 10 years for both under qualifying conditions | Licensed-contractor installation required. The 10-year term generally requires an owner-occupied residence and registration within 90 days. Labor, refrigerant and filters are not included. |
The table illustrates a critical buying lesson: warranty duration can vary by series inside the same brand. The MRCOOL DIY 5th Generation certificate, for example, states 5-year parts and 7-year compressor coverage without registration, while the separate DIY Select warranty states 1-year parts and 2-year compressor coverage. A generic claim that “MRCOOL has a seven-year compressor warranty” would be incomplete.
Similarly, Daikin's current ductless warranty certificate PWDDMSTWZS lists the covered model patterns and spells out the initial and registered terms. Mitsubishi Electric maintains separate statements by model family and effective date; the current HM/WR/HX/WX residential statement should not be applied automatically to every Mitsubishi system.
Why registration matters
Registration often unlocks an extended term, but it is not universal. In the examples above, MRCOOL's current DIY 5th Generation and DIY Select certificates say no registration is required for their stated standard terms. Daikin generally provides an initial term for covered owner-occupied applications and a longer registered term when the product is registered within the stated window. Mitsubishi's specified HM/WR/HX/WX statement similarly adds an extended term when the residence, ownership and registration conditions are satisfied.
Some states and provinces restrict manufacturers from conditioning warranty rights on registration. Manufacturer documents identify exceptions and advise buyers to consult the applicable rules. The practical move is still simple: register promptly whenever the manufacturer offers registration, then save the confirmation. Registration is free documentation, and waiting can create an unnecessary dispute about eligibility.
Installer requirements can decide the claim
“DIY mini split” is a product category, not permission to ignore electrical, building or refrigerant rules. A system designed and warranted for consumer installation may allow a different claim path than conventional HVAC equipment. MRCOOL's 5th Generation DIY certificate allows its standard warranty without an installation invoice, while still requiring installation according to instructions and applicable law and permitting requirements.
Conventional systems frequently require licensed-contractor installation. The current Mitsubishi statement cited above applies to products installed by a licensed HVAC contractor. Daikin's certificate excludes electronically ordered equipment unless it is installed by a dealer adhering to applicable codes, policies and licensing requirements.
Before buying, match the installation plan to the warranty—not merely the marketing category. If the certificate requires a licensed installer, budget for one and retain the final invoice, model and serial numbers, permit records and commissioning information.
The hidden financial gap: labor, refrigerant and freight
For many buyers, the most surprising exclusions are not obscure legal clauses. They are the normal costs surrounding a repair.
- Diagnosis: A technician must determine which component failed and why.
- Labor: The covered replacement part still has to be installed.
- Refrigerant: Opening the sealed system can involve recovery, evacuation and recharge; the refrigerant itself may be excluded.
- Freight and handling: Shipping the replacement or returning a failed component may not be covered.
- Access work: Removing cabinetry, opening ceilings or reaching a difficult outdoor location is generally not part of a parts warranty.
MRCOOL's DIY 5th Generation certificate specifically excludes labor, diagnostic, installation, shipping and refrigerant costs. Daikin's cited certificate excludes labor, freight and refrigerant. Mitsubishi's current HM/WR/HX/WX statement excludes labor, shipping or handling, and consumables including refrigerant. These exclusions do not make the warranties unhelpful—a compressor or control board can be valuable—but they change the correct expectation.
A better warranty comparison matrix
| Question | Why it matters | Evidence to save |
|---|---|---|
| Are my exact indoor and outdoor models listed? | A similar series name may use a different certificate | Warranty PDF and product labels |
| What are the parts and compressor terms? | The periods may differ | Dated certificate or manufacturer page |
| Is registration required for the longer term? | Deadlines can be 60 or 90 days in current examples | Registration confirmation |
| Is licensed installation required? | Installer eligibility may be a condition of coverage | Contractor invoice, license and permits |
| Who pays labor, refrigerant and freight? | These can dominate the repair bill | Written labor warranty and service terms |
| Is coverage transferable? | A home sale may end or alter coverage | Certificate section for transfer and occupancy |
What to keep in your warranty file
- The sales receipt showing purchase date and authorized seller.
- Indoor-unit, outdoor-unit and branch-box model and serial numbers.
- The warranty certificate that was in effect on the purchase or installation date.
- Online registration confirmation and registration date.
- Installer invoice, license information, permits and startup records when applicable.
- Maintenance receipts and a simple dated maintenance log.
- Photos of equipment labels and the completed installation.
Store digital copies somewhere independent of the equipment. Outdoor labels fade, invoices disappear, and the live manufacturer webpage may later show a newer certificate for newer models.
How warranty should influence your buying decision
Warranty is one part of total ownership value, not a substitute for correct sizing, a suitable climate rating, proper installation and accessible service. A longer parts term can be valuable, but a shorter warranty with strong local service may be more useful than a longer parts-only term with no practical repair path.
Compare the complete system: equipment price, installer requirements, local technician availability, labor coverage, maintenance expectations and the manufacturer's claim process. If self-installation is central to the project, start with equipment explicitly designed for that route, such as the systems in our DIY mini split collection. You can also compare current MRCOOL, Daikin and Mitsubishi options, then verify the certificate attached to the exact model combination.
Frequently asked questions
Does a mini split warranty usually include labor?
Often it does not. Many manufacturer limited warranties provide an eligible replacement part but exclude diagnosis, removal, installation, shipping and refrigerant. A contractor or retailer may offer a separate labor warranty, so ask for it in writing.
Do I need to register my mini split?
It depends on the model and jurisdiction. Some certificates provide their stated standard term without registration; others require registration to receive an extended term. Register promptly when available and keep the confirmation, even if local law limits registration conditions.
Can I install a mini split myself without voiding the warranty?
Only when the exact product warranty and applicable law permit that installation path. Equipment specifically designed for DIY installation can have different terms from conventional systems that require a licensed HVAC contractor.
What happens to the warranty if I sell my house?
Transfer rules vary. Some warranties are limited to the original purchaser or original registered owner, while certain state laws may require different treatment. Read the transfer, occupancy and original-location sections of the exact certificate.
Does a replacement part restart the warranty?
Usually not. In the manufacturer examples reviewed here, replacement coverage generally lasts only for the remaining original term, sometimes with a short minimum period. Confirm the exact wording in your certificate.
Bottom line
The best mini split warranty is not necessarily the one with the largest number. It is the one whose exact model coverage, registration rules, installer requirements, exclusions and claim path fit how you will buy, install and service the system. Read the certificate before checkout, register on time, keep your records, and budget realistically for costs outside a parts-only warranty.
